Colton Sefton Mr. Bancroft English 111 4/13/17 Camping a great escape Some people consider a vacation to be sitting on a beach with their toes in the sand, others prefer skiing down a mountain in Colorado. But to many a relaxing vacation is a great escape to a national park or forest where they may enjoy leisure activities such as hiking, swimming, bird watching, and most important camping. Camping can be a most enjoyable experience if you are equipped with proper gear, you pack accordingly, and bring the idyllic amount of food. Camping is a wonderful opportunity that allows you to break free from a world of electronics, crowded cities, and day to day life. Just like anything camping starts with an idea. First you must ask yourself: where do I want to go? Choosing can be the hardest part, for this instance you should pick a location that is convenient to you, unless you inquire a spot that is out of state or even out of the country. This in turn also depends on how long you wish to stay in the location, staying longer will mean more packing and would be less cost effective. You must also be weary of the weather and how that effects what you may or may not bring. Electronics for example would not be keen to bring with you in case of rain or snow. When it comes to location every detail must be thought of before you officially decide. Most camping sites must be hiked too so it's a difficult task to turn around and go back. When you have deemed a spot the packing must commence. The very first thing you need to pack when going camping is good company and this is very important no one likes a Debby downer. Sometimes going alone can be just as good. Now that you've got your crew together you can begin to pack. Assuming a car will be taken to get to your location you can use it as your base of operations. Additionally, you will need to consider bringing a good backpack to carry all your belongings. Your backpack should be full of nifty little trinkets. Useful items such as a lighter, epi pen, rope, first aid, water tablets (to purify water), etc. Occasionally it is important for one or two group members to bring a cell phone in case of emergencies. The next very vital belonging you should bring is a tent. Most experienced campers would recommend a light weight tent with a waterproof canvas. Your next thought should be to consider whether you will you be sharing your tent. Most of the time the answer is "of course." Most of the time this is to save on space and for more affective and light weight way to travel. Now that you've decided on what you are sleeping in, focus on what you should be sleeping on, most people don't enjoy sleeping on the hard forest floor so be sure to pack a sleeping mat. What kind of sleeping mat depends on your preference and the weather type. Some enjoy a zero-degree sleeping bag, others might appreciate a more lightweight synthetic bag. Furthermore, one of the most essentials things when it comes to packing is clothing. It is important to remember you're not going to fashion show. Knowledgeable campers recommend some very breathable nylon underwear. Studies show that a pair of nylon underwear will last you up to a week if used appropriately. Depending on your comfort they say to pack two per week. Nylon underwear are extremely easy to wash, suggestions say to bring around a cup of laundry detergent and find the nearest lake to jump in. If your situation doesn't permit a lake it might be more effective to bring three to four pairs a week. As well for undergarments you should also focus on packing light, comfortable, and versatile clothing. The clothes should be good for hiking, decent for swimming, and suitable for weather conditions. Not only may the clothes have to work for the climate, but also should be flexible. A tank top ought to be worn more than once throughout the trip and a lightweight polyester coat for a cold night or
